This is the third volume in a series that begins - oddly enough - right after the events that should have been the first volume, but weren't... Sound confusing? This is the story of a Soviet attack on NATO in 1990. The Soviet offensive should be book one, right? Nope, Book one is the NATO counter attack after the enemy has been halted.So much for the series. This third book - Castro's Folly is not up to the standard set by the previous two. Stroock is very good with dialogue and description, fairly good with politics and character, and a bit too fiddly with action scenes. In alternative history books one wants a nice balance of action and motivation. Mr. Strook handled these well in both of the first volumes. Here he falls short. Part of the problem is that the cast of 'sides' is so full of obsolete acronyms that the reader won't be able to keep the good guys apart from the bad guys. Second, several story lines are begun but left hanging. Characters are facing crises. decisions and disasters - and then abandoned. We don't see them again... FInally, half the stories focus around some pretty obscure Central American geography. The reader will certainly be confused. But don't worry about the confusion, the whole Central American scenario is abandoned half way through the book. Same deal with the African story line, and one could ask some pointed questions about if there is a conclusion to the central story line - Cuba.
These considerable quibbles aside, the author spends too much time in the cockpit and foxholes, and not enough at the staff meetings in this book. The action is frantic but pointless, and soon repetitive - hardly worth one's time.
Bottom line? Skip this one. Do read the first two, but give Castro a miss.

Good story, booked on it just got to get next one in series now
Castro's Folly would have benefited from an editor, as the occasional typo and other error is noticeable. The writing is adequate if sometimes unimaginative. I'm just happy to see the author continuing the series, as any story about a conventional Third World War is always welcome, since that genre is horribly under-served!
The author has creatively made vignettes from his overall story of an alternative history WW3 in 1990. He has not confined his novels to the European battlefields but has shown the reader all that could possibly happen in other parts of the world because of a US/USSR clash. The author describes the action from the command centers to the foxhole and demonstrates an intense knowledge of the battlefield antagonists. I am a huge fan of "what if" novels and Mr. Stroock is one of the best. I highly recommend all the books in this series.
I really liked the first two books in the series. His other books in the series were much, much better. Not sure where he went wrong with this one. He ought to pull it and replace it with a better story.
This is a great series, however, parts of this book, primarily the Africa based operations were somehow just not seen as very relevant when the main point of this book in the series was about Central America and Cuba. While the African scenes are well done, they just seem out of place. If the point was to show that Cuban troops were involved in Africa, it probably did not need to take up nearly a third or so of the book to do it. The African content seemed to have no effect on the rest of the action which occurs in Central America, and then Cuba. Otherwise this is a really good series and the fact is many of the books stand up well as stand alone ones. Looking forward to next portions.
