Was a good read, could have spent a little more on happenings during the filming of "Gone with the Wind" as I am sure most readers would like to have read some of that. Not much in the way of anything startling about his life, pretty much stayed himself his whole life...nice to know his journey to wealth and fame was not an over night thing....as with many big stars, they start with a look that is not very popular and as their fame grows all of a sudden that look becomes "THE" look....something a lot of young boys and girls can learn, even if you are not popular at 15 does not mean you cannot be on top by 30.Product details

The King A Biography of Clark Gable Charles Samuels 9781258806729 Books Reviews
The biography held my interest for the most part, but there appeared to be an imbalance in the story-telling. While the author covered Mr. Gable's career as well as his first romance in great detail, significant female relationships, as he matured, were merely mentioned or given short-shrift.
A good book, however, it was too detailed about people in the man's life. Would have appreciated more regarding the man's accomplishments and associations with other performers. The relationship with Miss Lombard was very warm and solid.
Goes into a lot of depth of his childhood and early adult lives. The guy didn't have it easy especially when he was told by many he'd never be an actor. I'm giving it a four because the book did not mention the child he had with Loretta Young. If you're interested in this subject, read the book by Judy Lewis (Gable's daughter) entitled, "Uncommon Knowledge."
I enjoyed the writing a lot. It showed that Clark was a everyday guy. His career did not just fall into his lap. Basically he was just a good person and for Hollywood that's a rarity.
I've had this book in hardback for years, but had a hard time getting into it, so never finished it. On the kindle, I was determined to finish it. Again the first is slow, but I now know is vital to the personality of Clark Gable. Towards the end of the book, he was more real to me and I plan to see more of the movies he made, which I did not realize there were so many. Thanks- Susie.
I applaud the research and dedication to detail from the author. I assume the unrelenting descriptions of the hard physical labor and years of rejection were an effort by the author to invoke an understanding of the personality and character of Mr. Gable; however, I almost "gave up" on several occasions. I am glad to have finished the book. I am grateful for the insight into the subject matter - the actor and the industry - BUT I don't know that I could recommend the book . It was as much a punishment as it was a pleasure
A human being with all the faults and goodness human beings encompass but in a man whose persona was bigger than he was.
He was the most attractive man to me during my youth and yes, Gone With The Wind hooked me to him.
He was a cad to the women who loved him and helped him to become an actor. THat bothered me a lot. But he had his
good side too. An interesting biography. I'm glad I read it.
